What We Learn From Our Mothers

Every evening we serve Annabelle porridge before we get her ready for bed. We have been doing this for 10 months, since she began solids. After making porridge on the stove it can be scolding hot. Therefore, I have always tried to give it enough time to cool before I serve it to her. Routinely I always take from the edges first where I know it is the coolest; this being something I remember my mum teaching me to do when I was little.

It wasn't until a few weeks ago that Steinar suggested that we serve the porridge to Annabelle from a plate instead of a bowl. Why you ask? Why didn’t I think of that, I ask myself. The porridge cools so much faster when it’s spread out thinly. This is something Steinar remembers his mum teaching him when he was little.

This little interaction got me thinking….

What sorts of things will Annabelle remember from her childhood that I will have taught her? When she moves away from home, what is going make her grateful for me? What will make her “homesick”? What will she tell her friends that her childhood and upbringing were like.

This reminds me of a sign I saw at a friend’s house that said something like this:
“The first half of my child’s story is written in this home…”
Wow! What a fantastic reminder of what a huge honor and responsibility it is to raise a child and a family.

What a important thing to remember. The things that we instill in our children will affect not only them but future generations as well. I also like what you said about "things that will make our children homesick for home"... it makes me want to make everything so much more special and fun for Amelia. I always love how my mom took the time to make every holiday special. For example: she would always make leave us a homemade card, a gift and a clue for our easter choclates on our breakfast plate on valentines.
